ThomasNet Traffic Is Down Sharply. Here’s Where It Went.
Buyers Find Suppliers On ChatGPT – Are You There Yet?
For years, a lot of manufacturers built their pipeline the same reliable way: word of mouth. A buyer you had worked with for a decade moved to a new company, and your name moved with them. Referrals compounded and new contracts followed old relationships.
That engine is stalling out. Not because the work stopped being good, but because the people carrying those relationships are retiring, and the buyers replacing them don’t source suppliers the same way their predecessors did. They are not browsing a directory and filtering by category. They are opening ChatGPT and asking a direct question: “Who can handle this job?” And the data shows this isn’t a one-off. It’s a wholesale shift in how industrial buyers work.
The Data Doesn’t Lie: AI Adoption Has Already Crossed the Tipping Point
- 88% of organizations now report using AI in at least one business function, up from 78% just a year earlier (McKinsey, 2025).
- Global AI users have surpassed 1 billion, and estimates that include AI features embedded in everyday apps put the number closer to 1.5 billion (DataReportal, Digital 2026).
- About half of U.S. adults now say they have used an AI chatbot, up from a third in 2024 (Pew Research Center, 2026).
- AI-referred website traffic has grown at triple-digit rates year over year, peaking at nearly 693% growth during last year’s holiday season alone (Adobe Analytics, 2026).
Meanwhile, the Traffic Tells the Other Half of the Story
If AI is the rising line, Thomasnet is the falling one, and you don’t have to take our word for it. Here’s what Semrush’s traffic data shows for the platform over the past several years:
Traffic climbed steadily for years, then rolled over hard starting around 2022 and hasn’t recovered. We have written before about Thomasnet’s roughly 88% traffic decline, and this chart is the visual proof. A platform that aimed to be a dependable channel is shrinking, at the same time that AI-driven discovery is exploding.
When you overlay the two trends, the picture is unmistakable:
Discovery vs. Recommendation: Why Directories Cannot Compete
The reason this shift is permanent, not cyclical, comes down to a structural difference between how directories and AI tools like ChatGPT actually work.
ThomasNet runs on discovery.
- Buyers browse categories
- They filter by capability or location
- They compare a stack of similar listings side by side
AI runs on recommendation.
- It interprets the buyer’s actual intent, not just their keywords
- It reads technical requirements the way an engineer would state them
- It names specific companies directly, often without ever sending the buyer to a list
Those are two fundamentally different jobs. One shows buyers a menu and lets them do the work. The other does the work for them and hands them an answer. Buyers, understandably, prefer the answer.
That’s also why paid directory placement does not translate into AI visibility. A premium listing gets you seen inside someone else’s platform. It does nothing to make AI tools trust and cite your company when a buyer asks a real question.
So, the Key Question Is: What Actually Earns You AI Visibility?
AI systems do not rank paid placements in their search results. Instead, they show companies based on what they can actually read and verify about you online:
- Substantive website content that answers real technical questions, not generic marketing copy
- Demonstrated technical authority in your specific capabilities and applications
- Structured, well-organized data that AI tools can parse and understand
- Genuine relevance to the specific query a buyer is asking, not just your industry in general
Now think about this. Does any of the above exist in your directory listing? No! It lives on your website, and it’s the direct result of the content strategy behind it.
Which Companies Are Already Pulling Ahead in AI Search?
We are seeing a clear, repeatable pattern among manufacturers who are winning right now. They are not the companies spending the most on directory placement. They are the ones who:
- Invest in real technical content instead of generic marketing pages
- Build deep, product- and application-specific pages
- Answer the actual engineering questions their buyers are asking
- Optimize for Google and AI visibility at the same time, not one or the other
They have stopped renting visibility from a shrinking platform and started building their own asset, i.e., a website that AI tools trust enough to cite.
ChatGPT Vs. Thomasnet: The Bottom Line
The retirement-driven referral network that used to feed your pipeline is not coming back the way it worked before. But it is being replaced by a new discovery layer that is already handling a huge share of B2B supplier research.
The question “should we still be on Thomasnet?” is redundant. The important question is, “Are we visible where our buyers are actually searching today?”
For a growing share of manufacturers, the honest answer is no, and they don’t know it yet because nothing tells them. There is no dashboard alert when ChatGPT recommends your competitor instead of you.
